Nick Cave tour announced!

Yes, to those of you who read Pitchfork and Drowned in Sound every day, this is old news. But for those of us (once again, me) who up until recently had really time-consuming, boring temp jobs, this news is current enough to warrant posting it on their blog they haven't updated all week. Nick is back on the road this spring, promoting Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, the album that proves we totally have so much in common even beyond our mutual love of the Southern Gothic and small primates. Did you notice that use of the triple exclamation mark? I did. It's a common Abomb trait. This is what fate looks like, ladies and gentleman, this is what fate looks like.

As previously reported, Dig!!! comes out on Mute on March 3rd in the Old World, and April 8th on Anti- here in the New one. So far all the shows announced have been in Europe and the UK, but word on the street is that a US tour is in the works. Road trip!!!

I think I like this band These Are Powers

I usually tend to dislike bands with names that tell you what exactly they are. But this band is good. These Are Powers features a dude from Liars, and a lady from Knife Skills, and another person who I'm sure is lovely, but I closed the window with their press information without remembering to check out what band they were in. It's like Teenage Jesus meets a slowed down PIL or something else that a lazy journalist (me) would say because they can only think in terms of other bands and want to shy away from the whole "This band sounds like a glacier falling into an ocean of swirling guitar harmonies" bullshit style of writing.

These Are Powers are from Brooklyn, which is good, because in the springtime I intend to move to Brooklyn. And I don't wanna spend the next few years of my life surrounded by ironic kaffiyeh-rocking, neon-tennis-shoe-sporting fucks whose life goal it is to get their picture taken at a nightclub known primarily for playing LCD Soundsystem deep cuts. No, I want to spend my life "being real" and listening to rather abrasive, screamy bands while wearing my Gunne Sax fake Victorian clothes and asking people if they want to start a band with me. That's what I want to do with my life. Brooklyn or bust!!!!

Siouxsie Sioux on tour!

Hey, check it out! It's Siouxsie Sioux and Kid Congo Powers!! Not on tour, but in this photograph. They look like friends. It is nice to have friends. Who wants to go see Barack Obama with me on Saturday? Friends? Friends????

Unfortunately Siouxsie will not be heading to M-Town on her upcoming "Mantaray" tour, which is okay, because I saw her at Electric Ballroom last autumn. It was awesome, but there was a lot of pleather. And not in the audience, either--on the backing band. This was kind of disturbing. It was like 1992. I do not want anything to be like 1992.

Apparently Siouxsie herself does not have this qualm, because Rasputina is opening most of the shows. I think I saw them on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" once, when I was in junior high, or possibly high school. Oh God, between this and the Portishead reunion, I am getting THIS close to putting on a pair of plaid pants and calling my friends for 3 hour long conversations about how "everything sucks. I can't wait to get out the suburbs." Yikes.

Portisheadstravaganza!!!

Don't lie: you love it!!! You can't get enough of all this Portishead news!!!

Or maybe you're just like me, and there are weird unearthly noises emanating from the basement and you haven't really been able to feel your feet properly for the past two hours b/c it's been non-stop fucking cold outside and you have the most boring job of all time and you're so desperate for entertainment that your big idea is to accumulate various newspaper crossword puzzles and surreptitiously complete them under the counter. (Note: I have never worked through an entire crossword puzzle. Filling in two answers is enough to remind me that they are boring, and for people who are not loudmouthed and entertaining enough on their own. That is why it is a "big idea.")

And, wow! Portishead has new promotional photos, which don't scream "1997, what a year! What ever happened to Cibo Matto?" when you look at them. That's nice!

Because I'm exhausted and my throat hurts, here's some news I copied directly from Pitchfork, just like I copied this picture from them! Thank, dudes.

New UK album date!= April 14, 2008

Okay, actually I didn't. Exhausted/potentially ill person humor.

Blood on the Wall tour

I am bored and hungry. It is after 10pm, but I cannot go out. Oh no, not after those "I have a dream" shots in honor of MLK Day last night. And that is why I am posting on this blog.

Do you ever find yourself sitting around, thinking "I wish I could go out and see a band tonight that sounds kinda like Sonic Youth, but isn't Sonic Youth?" If so, you're in luck! Because Blood on the Wall is touring!!! In support of their new album Liferz, out on the totally awesome Social Registry label!

But enough talking, let's get down to cut-and-pasting these tour dates. The cat sitting on my computer keyboard is making it slightly difficult and ineffective to write anything more, so that's all I got for the day. I will have to resolve this boredom issue in some other way. Blood on the Wall MySpace page!

Country bonanza II: Castanets West Coast tour!!!

I think Raymond Raposa, the Castanets guy, is so cool. It's not just the music, which is the kind of sparse, haunting Americana that needs to go on a roadtrip mixtape for when you're driving through Montana late, late at night by yourself. (I have never done this, but when I have my inevitable midlife crisis, I will totally do it.) It's also his back-story: Raposa tested out of high school super early and toured the United States by Greyhound bus. Hell, once I drove to see the World's Largest Ball of Twine (Made By One Man)! It's a nice 90 minute excursion from Minneapolis. And once I drove to South By Southwest, but I wouldn't really call that an odyssey of American exploration, more an exercise in how much Red Bull and gas station coffee one must consume to stay awake for 17 hours of driving, and a revelation about how scary the Kansas turnpike can be around 3am.

Darwin, MN. The World's Largest Ball of Twine (Made By One Man.) Truly a reason for MN state pride.

Alas, Mr. Castanets is not heading into my part of the world just yet, but for my West Coast friends, here are some tour dates. Here's also the requisite Castanets MySpace page link.

1.18.08- Eugene, OR - Sam Bond’s Garage
1.21.08 - San Francisco, CA - Cafe Du Nord
1.22.08 - Davis, CA - Fort Douglas

2.01.08 - Los Angeles, CA - The Echo

X "reunites" for another anniversary tour

This one, they say, is in honor of the LA rockabilly/garage/"cowpunk" (this last one is my favorite term, obviously) band's 31st anniversary. Great! Because I think I must have also seen the 29th anniversary reunion tour and the 27th anniversary reunion tour. And they were both awesome, although the last show was filled with middle-aged dudes loudly "talking music" in order to impress all the people there who, of course, already knew who the bands were, or else they wouldn't be there. Impressive! And did I mention that Rollins opened the show? Rollins opened the show!!

But this time who knows what surprises are in store for us? Will Rollins be there again? Will Jello Biafra be at the SXSW date? My guess is yes. Biafra is ALL OVER SXSW!!! He loves it there.*

Here's some olde tyme footage of X playing "Johnny Hit and Run Pauline." Exene, though I love her and plan on naming a cat after her when I get one, makes a good argument against drinking and singing. From now on all my karaoke is 100% sober. And if anyone wants to start that X cover band I was talking about all the time a couple years ago (the gimmick is that I, the girl, sing all the John Doe parts, and YOU, the dude, sing all the Exene parts. Crazy, huh?!?!?!) I cannot think of a better debut performance than opening for the actual X here in Minneapolis!!! Hippies would totally be into it.

*This statement cannot be verified.

Country bonanza! My Morning Jacket new album, concert dates

Wow. I so have no motivation to do anything--not even to update this blog. Which is too bad, because as it turns out, my New Year's Resolution for 2008 was to attain/maintain motivation for all the things I start and never finish. (Or to be more exact, things I think of starting and never actually start.) Here are some things I did today:

-washed a teacup that had been sitting on my bedroom floor for 3 and a half weeks
-listened to my mom conduct a one-sided conversation with the cat for three full minutes
-took a shower
-got dressed
-looked at the internet

Yes! That's right! I did all those things, and possibly later I will plan on doing even more! For example, the bedroom I'm staying in has started to resemble the house occupied by that guy on The X-Files who starts "nesting" in massive piles of old newspapers and eventually creates gross, creepy tunnels all through his abode. Yeah, that is what this room looks like. Except, instead of newspapers, it is filled with scattered, faux-Victorian-looking clothes that I never properly unpacked. Because I am not living with my parents!!! OH NO I AM NOT!!!! But perhaps I will consider cleaning it, a little.

Update: My mom just said, "I am a little disappointed that no one noticed the butter! Last night there was just a tiny amount, but today we have a full half-stick!"

Wow, with that kind of excitement you would think I'd be itching to stay here and really get down to writing half-assed music stories on my world famous music blog. But actually, HOLY SHIT, I am feeling the need to get out of here as soon as possible.

And so I am not going to take the time to make a nice segue into a story about My Morning Jacket and their new untitled album scheduled for release on ATO Records on 10 June. There aren't any new tracks up on ye olde My Morning Jacket MySpace page but perhaps someday there will be. Until then, here's the very few dates the Americana dudes have scheduled in '08.

3.10.08 - Houston, TX - Verizon Wireless Theatre with Yo La Tengo
3.13.08 - Austin, TX - Austin Music Hall (SXSW)
3.15.08 - Austin, TX - St. David's Church (Jim James solo) (SXSW)
6.20.08 - New York, NY - Radio City Music Hall ("An Evening With My Morning Jacket")

A Frames dude's other band playing SXSW, holla! A Frames playing, well, Seattle a lot.

Superloud Seattle post-punk band A Frames have a new album in the works, according to a fairly old summer post on the website of their now defunct label, Dragnet Records. Alas, new label Sub Pop ain't saying shit about it just yet. In another fun twist, I can't really figure out what's going on with either the A Frames, or dude's other band, the Intelligence from their MySpace pages. And if one can't find out information--whether it be tour dates or embarrassing information about someone you don't like--on MySpace, where else can you turn? I mean, really?

I hadn't thought about either band much recently until I read that a new album from the Intelligence was in the works. So, totally I am out of the loop and not really fit to be reporting this, but hey, my hands really hurt from writing temp job resumes and I gotta get out of my parents' house soon before the creepy silence and identical houses get to me even more. But I was thinking of updating this blog, first! Because that's the kind of person I am, Temp Agency: I'm a prioritizer. I'm a go-getter.

And also I like really loud music. So that's where we are today. A Frames are playing shows with their friends the Climax Golden Twins. And they're doin' it in Seattle!

A Frames and friends

2.17.08 - Seattle, WA - El Corazon
4.25.08 - Seattle, WA - The Funhouse

The Intelligence's new album Deuteronomy is coming out on In the Red Records. They're also playing--wait for it--Seattle, but then they're also coming to SXSW! Yay!

The Intelligence

1.20.08 - Seattle, WA - Neumo's
3.14.08 - Austin, TX - Somewhere at SXSW

Good ol' MySpace profiles:

I like "Cheer Up Switch" myself.

Dear dancefloors, get ready to be tore up. Love, the new Annie single

Shocker: not everything I like is horribly depressing. (Only like 95% of the things I like will slowly suck out your will to live.) Because you see, although I do have several bats tattooed on my arm and a deep and enduring love for early 80s postpunk/"this is not a goth band, but really, everyone considers it to be" style rock, the other thing I really, really like is DISCO. No joke. I am a karaoke CHAMPION at Diana Ross' "Upside Down" and Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free." And that is why I love Bergen, Norway disco lady Annie.

Pitchfork is reporting that Annie has a new single in the works, and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it will be excellent, because it is a cover of a song that everyone already knows is excellent. That's right: it's Stacey Q's "Two of Hearts"! Alas, I can't find a song clip of this on the internet, but I can tell you that the B-Side of the single is a new track called "Songs Remind Me of You" and that at some point in our lives they're both supposed to come out on Island Records, perhaps even this spring.

New Nick Video!!!

Yes! Here's a picture of Nick Cave and Kid Congo Powers sitting on a beach drinking coconut drinks. It totally looks like the best vacation EVER!!!! There is also a new Nick Cave video for Dig, Lazarus, Dig!, the lead single off of the album of the same name, and that is why I am actually writing this post. The album's due out March 3rd in the UK and in the States, well, at some point, I'm sure. Possibly Mute Records blew their Nick Cave Video Budget on renting that monkey for Grinderman's "Grinderman" video
because this one has a fairly low-budget sorta feel, with Nick roaming the streets of many different lands, gesticulating at the camera and dancin' around. He even walks past a very blurry yet very dapper Mr. Peanut. Mr. Peanut! I was so excited to see him because (if you are familiar with my obsession concerning UK Barber shop chain Mr. Topper's you will already know that) I have a weakness for cartoon animals/pieces of food that wear a tophat and carry a cane they don't really need. So dashing!

Here's the video. I like the looks of the new website. That Ouija board thing is awesome. Also, Nick Cave and I are both Virgos. Oh, did I say that already? Possibly at the bar, while drunk? SORRY.

UPDATE: Wow, the videos of the Bad Seeds' seance are incredible! What kind of spectral presence will respond to their otherwordly efforts?

Seance 1

Seance 2

Mr. Peanut

Mr. Topper!!

Also, here's that picture of Nick Cave passed out on a bar again. I like it, and so it's back.

Oh, hell yes: SXSW already spilling the details

First of all: stay away from my wristband, motherfuckers. I am going to this thing. I am going to the bat bridge, and I am going to Las Manitas, and I am going to drink so much Sparks that my hands start shaking and I need to get mixed up in some sorta shady backroom deal to get Qualuudes just so I can sleep for four hours every night.

Secondly: yay! I like it when I don't have to wait for things, and here SXSW is already oozing out the line-up. According to Drowned In Sound, artists like the Kills, My Morning Jacket, These New Puritans, the Raveonettes, and A Place to Bury Strangers have all been confirmed. The article also lists a good many other acts that will be playing, but since I'm not totally into all those dudes I didn't bother to post it. But I did bother to link to it!! YOU'RE WELCOME!!!!

Also tipped for Keynote speeches are Lou Reed, Thurston Moore, and DARYL HALL. Naturally I will probably not see these fellows in (speaking) action, since I will probably be hungover and thirsty, and already engaged in my traditional "enchilada for every meal" endeavor. But at least we will know they are there. And seriously, guys, DARYL HALL. Of Hall and Oates. I really want to see him, preferably in line in front of me at the Heavy Metal Pizza Stand. (Or maybe not--I think that place once gave me food poisoning.) Seriously, guys. I am not joking. Google image him. We are going to find him.

Friday 4 January 2008

I love you, Crystal Castles!!!!

As promised, here's the write-up about Crystal Castles I said I'd do yesterday if I couldn't think of anything else to write about. I woke up this morning with their track "Alice Practice" stuck in my head, and I thought, "OK, I am extremely into this song, so I am totally going to write about Crystal Castles today." Then I sat and stared at their MySpace tour listing for about 45 minutes, thinking, "It just says "UK Tour TBA" and I can't find anything out about the dates, so maybe I should wait till they get that info up." Then I realized that I was sitting at my parents' beige suburban house, looking out the window at two other suburban beige houses, and I really wanted to listen to music with a lot of screaming and noise, so I just decided, "What the hell, I AM going to write about Crystal Castles."

And that is how my head works. Had there been any Big Black news I might've written about Big Black, but there wasn't. And probably there never is going to be anymore, unless there's another Touch and Go label anniversary party. Anyways...let's talk about Crystal Castles!!!

1. They are from Canada, but that's really about all we know! So mysterious!!!
2. They sound like the Locust vs. Glass Candy, with lots of noise and Atari! It is kind of painful to listen to, but in a good way! Also, maybe you remember this Oakland/Berlin band the Vanishing that sounded like a really abrasive Siouxsie and the Banshees with electronic elements? Crystal Castles kinda sounds like that, but more so. Just imagine! At any rate, I've been making my cat listen to "Alice Practice" and the HEALTH vs. Crystal Castles remix of "Crimewave", and he seems to be alright with it, so if my cat can deal with it, maybe you won't hate it? Maybe? Or possibly he is just deaf.
3. Crystal Castles also did a remix of Liars' "It Fit When I Was a Kid", which used to be up on the Liars' MySpace page, but now no longer is. Good luck finding it!!

So, here's the not too informative tour date listing for the band in all its uninformative glory:

1 Feb 2008 "EARLY FEBRUARY U.K. DATES T.B.A."
8 Feb 2008 Le Triptyque PARIS
9 Feb 2008 Le Grand Mix TOURCOING
10 Feb 2008 Cabaret Electric LE HAVRE
12 Feb 2008 Digital NEWCASTLE
13 Feb 2008 Club Academy MANCHESTER
14 Feb 2008 Bar Academy BIRMINGHAM
15 Feb 2008 Audio BRIGHTON
16 Feb 2008 Astoria (NME Award show) LONDON

For US dates with HEALTH, see DFCC back and in effect. Also HEALTH is touring.

Crystal Castles' MySpace page is HERE. Ouch! I can and will listen to that all day.

Thursday 3 January 2008

DFCC back and in effect. Also, HEALTH are touring.

I hope you have not given up on this blog. I hope that you are reading it right now. I also hope that you will forgive me for my lack of holiday season updates, because I am TOTALLY BACK AND IN EFFECT!!!!

First of all, I need to tell you about HEALTH. Because I need someone to go to this show with me, and everyone I mention it to is all, "HEALTH? What is that?" or just says "HEALTH?" in a vaguely condescending tone intended to convey awareness in spite of the speaker actually not having a clue about what he/she is talking about but not wanting the other person to realize that he/or she has no idea what he/she is talking about. (This is the Minneapolis way.) Secondly, I also need someone to get me in to this show for free, but that is another matter.

HEALTH are from LA, where maybe I should move to instead of New York because generally speaking all the LA bands I've heard recently have better names and sound scarier and more awesome than NY bands. (Also because I want to be friends with Liars and talk about Blixa Bargeld all the time.) HEALTH sound like Liars-Kraftwerk (sometimes) and they include Swans in their list of influences, so you know I'm gonna be into it! They also have a promotional photo that looks suspiciously nu-rave, but I'm trying not to notice that. At the moment they're touring the West Coast with a few different groups. Then in February, a US tour with Crystal Castles--who are also awesome--hits the rest of the United States, including my wintry home. And in May it's over to my UK friends, who will probably get to watch them open for the Klaxons or something like that.
