Incredible Suicide Covers EPs/ Marriage Proposal

Instead of writing cover letters for jobs, I am doing this. This is what you do to me, music blog that people read off and on, and that I neglect for months at a time when I have a shitty job I hate. But seriously, I am so excited about this new Suicide tribute concept that I would way rather be writing a bunch of mumbo jumbo about how ECSTATIC I am that HTRK is on one than typing another letter about how I am dynamic, and am a team player. (Although I am both! Give me a job, please!!!)

These tribute EPs are going to be the best EPs ever, possibly, because of all the totally beyond A-list artists doing covers of one of earth’s most stone-cold awesome bands, Suicide. Check out this list of contributors, most of whom I absolutely freakin’ LOVE, some of whom I kinda like, and some of whom I deeeeefinitely “LIKE” like (you know who you are):
Liars, the Horrors, the Boss, Lydia Lunch, Spiritualized, HTRK, Grinderman, Sunn O))) (with Pansonic), Primal Scream, Klaxons, Peaches, Vincent Gallo, Julian Cope, Effi Briest, Xvectors, No Bra, S.C.U.M., Nik Void, and Justin K. Broadrick associate Stephen Burroughs.

(Note: There are several people on this list that I will marry right now. And I am not the marryin’ kind. So boys, please act fast. I will take the first one of you that emails me at this blog’s new email address, Alison.dfcc@gmail.com. Seriously.)

The idea behind these limited release digital or 10”EPS (depending on what you like)—available on Mute Records imprint Blast First (Petite)—is that one established act will be paired with a less established act and a Suicide live track, all in celebration of Alan Vega’s 70th birthday. (Who knew?) There’s going to be one released every month for a year, starting July 28th. This means a lot of my income will be going to Blast First (Petite.) Which is funny because I don’t have any income. (See above. Do not worry, boy from that list who asks to marry me first, I won’t ask you to support me. I live off coffee and vodka.)

Here’s what the EPs look like so far. Also available now is the Suicide ultrafan collection called Suicide Live: 1977-1978. Sorry if that’s not the exact title, my computer is being wacky. It's really expensive and it's alllll live shows.

EP #1: (July 28)

01 Bruce Springsteen: "Dream Baby Dream"
02 Suicide: "Midnight Special" (live)
03 Shilpa Ray: "Mr. Ray"

EP #2: (August 25)

01 The Horrors: "Shadazz"
02 Suicide: "Radiation"
03 Nik Void: "Rocket U.S.A."

01 Peaches: "Johnny"
02 Suicide: "Johnny" (live 1978)
03 S.C.U.M.: "Wild in Blue"

HOT DAMN: Teenage Jesus and the Jerks play 2 shows in NYC!!!!

OMG OMG This is so amazing I can't even think of any typically droll thing to say about it. Ohhhhh man, the only problem(s) is/are that I have no $$$, and that the shows are on the same night as my place of employment, Minneapolis' Electric Fetus Records store's 40th anniversary party at First Avenue. So of course I have to go to that, I mean, the city needs to experience my cover of the Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now" with the all record store employee band, the Electric Fetus All-stars. (This could be my big break!!!!!)

But ohhhh money, you are such a bitch.

The legendary no wave band was fronted by Lydia Lunch and throughout its short lifespan featured people like Jim Sclavunos (later of the the Bad Seeds, Sonic Youth, the Cramps) and James Chance of Contortions fame. They're playing two shows at the Knitting Factory in NYC on June 13 to celebrate the release of that Thurston Moore and Byron Coley book No Wave: Post-Punk. Underground. New York. 1976-1980 and the shows have an intriguingly described secret guest. Oh SWOON.

Someone please help Lydia Lunch

I know stuff doesn't come easy for Lydia Lunch. She's told interviewers that her releases are difficult to keep in print and that money for promotions is hard to come by. I feel you LL, don't ever change! You stick to your artistic vision. But recently it seems that Lydia has had to take a break from the art-porn and the societal indictments in order to do something a little more lucrative i.e. doing the voiceover narration for a Sundance Channel biopic of the late Seaquest DSV child star Jonathan Brandis. In case you missed out on Seaquest the first time around (like me), it basically sounds a lot like an underwater version of Star Trek. There's a man with gills! There's a teen heartthrob (The late Mr. Brandis)! AND THERE'S AN ADORABLE DOLPHIN IN A FUNNY SCUBA SUIT!!!

According to the IMDB, Ms. Lunch tells the true life story of the tragic young man in 2006's Forgetting Jonathan Brandis, and did the same for an earlier (but somehow less funny) profile of River Phoenix. Now, somehow this doesn't make Lydia any less scary to me (in that "please don't yell at me!" way), in fact, it kind of makes her even more awesome. So, the next time you see LL around town (and she's coming, so you might!) buy her a coffee or take her to Jasmine Deli or something, because every cent helps.

"Let's celebrate the life of a brilliant young actor together!"

DISCLAIMER: Dear Lydia, I love you not just for your haircut, but for your music, too. Please do not hate me for making fun of your dolphin narration. They are wonderful creatures and I bet voiceovers are totally better than temping. Keep up the good work!!!
