Back from hiatus...and Kid Creole stuff going on

Sorry for the hiatus; I had the flu. And there was absolutely nothing--and trust me when I say "nothing"--exciting going on in music news. NOTHING. Also I didn't have enough money to go to the coffeeshop. Has your week been suffering without regular DFCC updates? Well then let me kindly suggest you contribute to the "Keep Alison caffeinated" fund. All donations go towards helping me drink coffee and use the free internet at my new local coffeeshop, Anodyne. (It has breakfast, too. DREAMY.)

But now, some vaguely exciting news. UK-based label Strut Records is releasing a retrospective of new wave/ZE Records style "mutant disco" artist/producer guy August Darnell (also known as Kid Creole...and the Coconuts). Entitled
Going Places: The August Darnell Years 1974-1983, the album comes out TODAY, April 14th in the UK, and your guess is as good as mine as to when it'll get imported stateside. The tracklisting showcases Mr. Darnell's work both as a member of his own group and as a producer, my favorite example of which is his work with deadpan mutant disco queen Cristina. Peep them jams:

01 Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band: "Sunshower"
02 Don Armando's Second Avenue Rumba Band: "Goin' to a Showdown"
03 Kid Creole & the Coconuts: "Going Places (Zemix Version)"
04 Cristina: "Is That All There Is?"
05 Gichy Dan's Beachwood No. 9: "On a Day Like Today"
06 Machine: "There But for the Grace of God Go I (LP Version)"
07 Don Armando's Second Avenue Rumba Band: "I'm an Indian Too (12" Version)"
08 Aural Exciters: "Marathon Runner"
09 Coati Mundi: "Pharaoh (Can't Take It to the Grave)"
10 Aural Exciters: "Emile (Night Rate)"
11 Kid Creole: "He's Not Such a Bad Guy After All (12" Version)"
12 Ron Rogers: "Don't Play With My Emotions"
13 Kid Creole & the Coconuts: "Double on Back"
14 Aural Exciters: "Paradise"
15 Kid Creole & the Coconuts: "Off the Coast of Me"

Dude's also playing a couple shows in the UK, all at places that sound awesome (Blinking Hall? Serious? YES. Powderham Castle? YES), except for Excel.

07-19 Norfolk, England - Blinking Hall
07-26 Exeter, England - Powderham Castle
07-27 London, England - Excel
08-09 London, England - Ascot Racecourse
09-13 Salisbury, England - Breamore

Check that sound:

Kid Creole

Cristina

And b/c it's awesome, and the above artists were once involved with the label, post-punk/no wave/mutant disco label
ZE Records
